Player Protection and Self-Exclusion in France
The ANJ’s register, operators’ tools, and the ban on minors
Last verified: 2026-10-05
France runs a national voluntary self-exclusion register covering casinos, gaming clubs and ANJ-approved online sites for at least three years; more than 85,000 people were registered in late 2025.
Player protection and self-exclusion in France
Overview
The ANJ treats excessive gambling as one of the market’s most pressing risks and says gambling is practised by one French person in two. Its voluntary self-exclusion scheme (interdiction volontaire de jeux) lets a person ask to be barred from casinos, gaming clubs, ANJ-approved online sites and FDJ and PMU games played with a player account. The exclusion lasts at least three years, renews tacitly, and cannot be lifted in the first three years; accounts already open with legal operators are closed.
The register has grown quickly: more than 85,000 people were on it in late 2025, against about 40,000 when the ANJ took it over in 2021, with about 19,000 registrations in 2024. On 18 November 2025 the ANJ relaunched the service online with stronger identity checks. Lawful operators must warn players of the risks, provide moderation, self-exclusion and deposit and stake self-limitation tools, and show the account balance permanently. Minors, even emancipated, may not take part in authorised games. Anyone concerned about their gambling can ask the ANJ or a licensed operator about these tools.
