Online casinos and sports betting are legal in Denmark when the operator holds a licence from the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden. Is online gambling legal in Denmark?
Yes. Since the Danish Gambling Act came into effect on 1 January 2012, private operators have been able to obtain licences for online casino, online betting, poker and bingo, ending Danske Spil's monopoly in online casino and sports betting. The regulator is Spillemyndigheden (spillemyndigheden.dk), part of the Ministry of Taxation. Lotteries remain with Danske Spil.
Online casino is now the largest liberalised gambling vertical. The authority's annual report showed online casino gross gaming revenue growing by more than 12% to DKK 4.3 billion in 2025, while sports betting shrank by 11.5%. In February 2026 the Minister of Taxation introduced further legislation to reform the sector, and details of the reform should be checked with the authority.
Spillemyndigheden licensing and player protection
Licences cover online casino, betting or both, and licensed sites show the authority's seal. Operators must meet technical certification and reporting requirements.
- Minimum age: 18.
- ROFUS: the national self-exclusion register. Operators must offer ROFUS registration and check it, and as of 1 August 2026 about 73,500 people were registered.
- StopSpillet: a free national helpline for gambling problems, established in 2019.
- Bonus and marketing rules: Danish rules regulate how bonuses and marketing may be offered, according to secondary sources whose details should be checked on the authority's site.
Tax on operators and on player winnings
Online casino and online betting operators pay 28% of gross gaming revenue. The rate rose from 20% to 28% at the start of 2021. Land-based casinos pay a higher rate under a different structure.
Winnings from gambling with Danish-licensed operators are not taxed for players, because the operator pays the duty. Winnings from sites without a Danish licence may be treated differently, so seek advice from the Danish Tax Agency (Skattestyrelsen).
Games, payments and advertising
Online slots, live casino and football betting lead the market, and operators in 2026 hold roughly 50 active licences according to secondary sources. MobilePay, bank cards and Trustly-style bank transfers are widely used. Danish players typically identify themselves with MitID.
Advertising must comply with the Gambling Act and the Danish Consumer Ombudsman's guidance on marketing, which restricts promotions aimed at minors and sets conditions for bonuses.
